THURSDAY QUOTE

"There is privacy about Winter which no other season gives you...In Spring, Summer and Fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in Winter...can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself."

~Ruth Stout

Thanks to Nancy Perlman for the quote.

  1. In the context of gardening winter as a quiet time makes sense. There's no digging, weeding, planting to be done. All you can do is imagine next year's garden--what should stay, what should go, what to change, what to add.

Her gardening methods are a lot like how I garden.

  2. I think that's the type of gardener I would to be, too.

The winter part reminds me of a meditation cue: there's nothing to be done, nowhere to go.....

  3. At the moment I am doing nothing while waiting for Superbowl party guests (I know, don't eat the onion dip!). I am not good at doing nothing, but I'm less bad at it than I once was. It's remarkably hard, though!

  4. Sounds like a perfect opportunity to learn a mantra.

  5. Well, I have homework then. Presumably I should use it? Chanting is not my favorite, but I often dislike (at first) what later turns out to be good for me. I have no idea why that is so...

  6. Exactly! What is poison in the beginning becomes nectar in the end.

A mantra may be repeated aloud or whispered, or it may be done mentally.
